New Blog Site

I'm so sorry to be an inconvenience, but after looking through many other peoples' blogs of Korea, majority of them use tumblr.  It seems more customizable and easier for uploading and posting.  I hope you like the new look, I definitely put a lot of time into tweaking it and making it unique!  Come with me on my journey to Korea! :)

Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Kayla and this is going to be my official blog about my experiences, adventures, lessons, and fun while studying abroad in Korea at Yonsei University for the Spring 2013 semester.  A week ago, I, along with my other colleagues, were notified of our acceptance into the Freeman Scholars Asia Study Abroad Program.  I had planned on studying in Korea before the acceptance, but with this scholarship, a huge financial burden has been lifted and I can now focus on really experiencing all there is to experience in Korea.

I am eternally grateful to Mr. Freeman and Mrs. Freeman for being extremely generous and thoughtful to provide such an incredible opportunity to us students.  Many of our dreams would not have been possible without their help, so I am truly blessed to have such amazing people in this journey of learning what the world has to offer.  Thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity, it is appreciated beyond words.

A little about myself: I am a junior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, double majoring in accounting and finance. Upon graduation next fall semester, I plan to be a part of the 3/2 MAcc Program to fulfill the required 150 credit hours in order to sit for the CPA exam.  I have had an interest in Korea ever since my family got digital, because there are so many channels about K-pop, Korean culture, and Korea's environment and landscape.  Instantly I knew I wanted to visit sometime soon to see it all firsthand.  I chose Yonsei University specifically because it has a number of business classes to choose from, in which many have already been petitioned for by previous exchange students.  I plan on taking classes equivalent to Shidler's BUS 312, BUS 345 (you don't have to wait until your last semester to take this class if your study abroad school offers an equivalent), FIN 311, and FIN 307.  In Yonsei University's application, it says that exchange students are only allowed to take 3 business classes, but I expressed to them my interest in taking 4 in my statement of purpose, and will later blog to confirm if this is possible.  For those of you who would want to take 4 business classes, Sara Balder, study abroad specialist, says to inform them about as much issues or concerns as early as possible so they can figure out a solution.

Regarding this Yonsei application, a piece of advice is to be wary of their deadline.  After you receive the admission from the MIX office, it is essential that you also complete Yonsei's application, and pay attention to how long it takes to mail your application to Korea.  You have about one month to do so, so get it done ASAP so you don't forget about it and put it off to the last minute like I did.

There is not much more information I can give at the moment as it is still early in the process, but I will make sure to be as thorough as I can since preparing to study abroad for approximately four months can be very stressful and complicated.  After an explanation of the tedious procedures are over and I am in Korea, I look forward to sharing my exciting experiences and fun adventures while there so stay posted! ^.^
